Fall Prep: Setting Your Beds Up For Rest

As autumn begins, your garden deserves a pause before winter. Preparing beds now means stronger, healthier soil and an easier start in spring. Here’s a simple guide:

  1. Clear Spent Plants – Remove faded annuals and any diseased material. Compost what’s healthy, throw out the rest.

  2. Add Compost – A 2–3 inch layer of compost feeds your soil all winter long.

  3. Mulch for Protection – Straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips help insulate soil and suppress weeds.

  4. Plant Cover Crops – Rye, clover, or vetch enrich the soil with nutrients and organic matter.

  5. Tidy Tools – Clean and oil tools before storing for winter.

💡 Tip: Take photos of your garden layout before clearing — they’ll help you plan next year.

With these steps, your beds will rest and regenerate, setting the stage for spring’s abundance.
